RQ for 9 January 2013 (2A)

To read: Pages 3–4 of Chapter 1 (We’ll read the rest of Chapter 1 later.) and Section 2A (pages 9–12).
Be sure to understand: Examples 1 and 2.

Answer the following questions by commenting on this post. (Your answers don’t need to be exhaustive, just a sentence or two.)

  1. What are the two parts of every inductive proof?
  2. I like to think about mathematical induction like lining up a bunch of dominos so that you can knock them all down by knocking down the first one. Briefly describe what the two steps you identified in the previous part are in terms of linking up dominos. (In case that’s a cultural reference you don’t get, check out the video of a bunch of dominos being knocked over after being lined up at the end of the post.)
  3. What questions do you have after reading this section that you would like Prof. Meakin to address (or me when I return)? (If you have no questions, you don’t have to answer this part.)
